Venice Skate Park is a Nice Place to Chill

I hit up the skate park on the Venice Beach boardwalk yesterday and took some pics. The set up is awesome, the park is sick and there are many great, talented skaters. The location is spectacular because the park is pretty much on the beach and the only thing separating you from the ocean is a small stretch of sand. It's like a skating oasis where dreams come true and fairy tales become reality. Not really, but it's dope as fuck.

So I packed up the car, picked up my life and headed down the road. The balmy lights of NYC were still in the rear view mirror when the "check engine" light first reared it's ugly head but I pushed on forward undeterred. On the Road without a real game plan is the only way to travel during these turbulent yet triumphant times. You have to let life guide you sometimes, allow things to come to you rather than constantly stressing, chasing down your demons. Instead, slay them with your blind momentum. I felt the wind in my hair and it was awesome. I saw the open road and it was wide fucking open. From cities to plains, rocks to boulders, cliffs and mountains, streets and highways, bridges and dirt roads I broke on through. Through the days and through the nights. I ate Ethiopian food and slept on an air mattress in Pittsburgh, drank coffee from the Kum and Go, stopped at truck stops where men are men and women kind of look like men. I shot through Illinois and Iowa, Nebraska was a blur from the window of a speeding Subaru. In Iowa I had the best chicken francaise I think I have ever eaten and I have had it everywhere so that was a shocker. I felt the sting of a Colorado blizzard, visited the grave of Buffalo Bill as mist enshrouded the landscape like being swallowed by a ghost. Ate a calzone in Fort Collins that would have made any Italian New Yorker proud. It took all my strength and willpower to not stop in snow flooded Vail Colorado for a day or two of snowboarding but the road was beckoning and alas, my snowboard remained dry. I-80 was good to me, the cops were scarce and the speeds blistering. I am proud to say I never stopped at a single Starbucks and I might never again. Gas ain't cheap but beautiful scenery is the cheapest drug there is. Utah was breathtaking as was Arizona. I loved the old west feel and wide open spaces, abandoned Indian arts posts and dirt roads to nowhere. Jagged jutting rock formations that seem so out of place and so random. Mexican Hat rock is insane, doesn't even seem real to be perfectly honest. The Grand Canyon, oh how grand she is. If you like huge holes you will be mesmerized at the grand canyon. So much to see but if times not on your side you can still see enough to get your fill. Las Vegas, amazing and depressing. Such a cocktail of triumph and misery, highs and lows, wins and losses. I ate at the Planet Hollywood buffet and it was delectable. I had a full plate of assorted shrimp and everything from brisket to dumplings, pork chops to chicken kebab. I could barely walk when I finally put down my fork. After a quick agriculture checkpoint where they stop you and inquire about what plants and animals you are sneaking into California I was finally in.... you guessed it, California! I had made it from one coast to the other, safe and sound. I will always remember this trip and hopefully there will be many more to come. I love the open road and feel like every trip I take I mature on some level. I can't wait to hit the road again and have some new adventures, too bad I can't drive all the way to Thailand =)

Thanksgiving

I guess this is the holiday we are supposed to be thankful. Sometimes it's hard to know what we are really thankful for. Of course there are the old stand by's like life and love, family and god etc etc but what are you really thankful for. Life just happened and you have no control over it and same goes for family. God, well even if you believe your not 100% sure, and how cliche, it's not like you just won an academy award or the NBA championship so... Material possessions is a tad materialistic and shallow. I'm sure your thankful for your new car or brand new LCD screen but using these types of belongings to remind you of your thankfulness on a day like today is ridiculous.

The only thing that I keep coming back to are friends. Friends are the people in your life who don't really have to be there at all. Friends have no obligation to be by your side through thick and thin, to love you when at your best or worst. They can walk away and never look back, trust me I know. Nobody wants to be alone, especially on a holiday geared so much towards family but Thanksgiving with the family can become old hat. Thanksgiving with friends is when you share a real part of your heart, a true sharing of your soul created by the harmony of working together for something beautiful to be remembered for the rest of your life. A time capsule memory of when times were good and friends were family.

I used to have a lot of friends, maybe even too many for my own good. I didn't know how to juggle them all. I have been a good friend and a horrible friend at times but I must say, good or bad my heart was always in the right place. I am thankful for everyone I have been friends with, whether I still am friends with them today or not. It's only outside of my safety net, the bubble of family that I broke through to become the man I am today, because of friends, because of connections, inspiration and love. I have always wanted to be good to people I love, be honest and strong. There is no way I have always been these things but I will always try to be, if I have 1 friend or 500 I will always do my best to treat them the way I would want to be treated. So that is my pledge for the future, based on my overwhelming thankfulness, on this day of Thanksgiving, to friends far and wide, old and new, realized and forgotten, thank you. I hope we can mend and love yet again, from now till forever. Peace

I think the Planetarium is awesome and everyone should go learn a thing or two about the stars and planets that are all around us. Such a humbling experience peering at the moon and realizing how far and wide the universe really is. We get so caught up in our little lives on this planet we forget about the reality of the unknown beyond our stratosphere. Go to your nearest planetarium and remember to leave your "humans are gods" ego at home. It's truly a step up from Discovery channel and a great place to pick up nerds.

Soul Kitchen

The story goes like this - Jim Morrison used to eat and drink at a soul food eatery on the border between Venice and Santa Monica named Olivia's. He would write lyrics and poems on napkins, sitting in a booth, or at the long cafeteria style counter (that ran along the right side of the wall) while sipping alcoholic beverages and slowly becoming more and more drunk, until he would pass out and have to be physically removed (dragged) from the establishment. Some of the songs and poems that are now etched into rock and roll history were written here. He even penned a song named Soul Kitchen based on this small, soul restaurant, maybe you heard of it. Sadly, Olivia's closed and a part of history closed with it. Very few people actually know where it used to be but I luckily got to talking with an employee of a surf store named ZJ's boarding shop and he let me in on a little secret. Olivia's used to be located in a small portion of the back of the store. He allowed me to go back and snap a few pics where it was located, now just a surfboard/snowboard repair closet. If only walls could talk, the history they would reveal. This pic shows what Olivia's Soul Kitchen has become today. On a side note, the Malibu legend, surfer Miki Dora also hung out at Olivia's, along with the rest of the doors members and countless other notable musicians, bohemians and artists of the time.

Here's Jeff Ho, legendary surfboard shaper of Dogtown fame in front of his landmark store that once was the hangout for the Z-boys, the skate team that started skateboarding as we all know it. Jeff Ho opened the historic shop originally in 1973 with Skip Engblom and artist/photographer Craig Stecyk. They are credited with founding the Z-boys and launching the careers of such legends as Tony Alva, Jay Adams and Stacy Peralta to name the most famous of the crew. Here I am standing shoulder to shoulder with the man himself. He is a really nice guy, a nice guy. I must admit though, $50 a pop for an original Zephyr Skate Team shirt is a little steep. I guess in these turbulent economic times everyone is pulling the capitalist card. BTW, thats drummer Teddy Sahr on the right, hangin ten on the blvd. of broken boards.

I orignally felt like it was a waste to build a new one, especially since you would let go of so much history but I was wrong. This new stadium is sick and you feel the difference immediately. Joe aircraft carrier or the Millenium Falcon but I had to delve deeper into my imagination than them, I had to create my own forts and ships with cardboard and elmers glue. I had no choice but to be creative cause money was not in abundance when I was a lad. I used to order shirley temples at the bars my mom would sing jazz at just so that I could get those little plastic swords they stick through the maraschino cherries and use them to create a crew of pirates out of action figures I already owned. I used to be all about the toys, back when I had absolute creative independence. All I needed was a matchbox car in my pocket and some time to forget my troubles and off I went on a new adventure.

Well, what can I say about the town I live in. It's a place where you can get lost in the shuffle, forget what matters and ultimately go bananas. Dirty, filthy, greedy and yet it has pockets of beauty and calm. I guess like any entity you have good and bad, positive and negative forces that keep some sort of balance but if you live here in the city sometimes it seems like the balance has begun to favor one side of the scales. I see on a daily basis the disease of greed, the kind of greed that epitomizes evil, the kind of greed that allows people the excuses they need to keep bleeding the weak dry, keep sucking the life from the marrows of our once great metropolis with no care in the world, no remorse to speak of. I used to think, "laughing all the way to the bank" was some funny saying that relyed on humor to fit, not reality. Unfortunately it seems that the people who gave this city color, backbone and a sense of community are being driven out while lifeless bloodsuckers lie and cheat their way into a plush leather executives chair, hovering above a lifeless street 50 stories high in the polluted skies. What will be left when nobody can afford to live and eat in this once great city except for the smallest percentile of American families. There will be no flavor, no color, no hope. Only wealth and greed, back and forth on the seesaw of tyranny. So much was born on these cold, urban streets, a true testament to our imaginations and the beauty we have inside our minds and souls. But now we have abandoned our love and whats inside our hearts and minds for the comfort of a box in the sky, an overpriced meal, and a false sense of calm. Greed and regret go hand and hand when you come to the crossroads of life and death, and when this great city has finally been Disney-fied, entirely, and all soul swept away by the broom of greed, our joy, hope and love will be replaced by regret. HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

This picture takes me back in time like a mofo. This was me 26 or so years ago in Greenwich Village (actually this is a young boy in Venice Beach), free and easy, rolling on my belly, frolicking in the midday sun. Long before it was uncool to superman on your board, before you needed to know tricks and look the part, ripped jeans and a pair of Vans on your feet. This pic takes me back to when I knew nothing of the world besides doing what I loved for only the pure joy of doing it. When I still thought growing up was cool but a distant spec on the horizon. It didn't matter who saw me or who snapped a pic, who cared or who didn't. Getting lost in what you love and the background fading away is what made me young and kept things fun and fresh. As I have grown I have realized I forget to live in the moment, paralyzing myself with worry and concern when I should really stop and enjoy my time here on earth, like this little guy blazing accross the asphalt universe.

I know how it feels, you arise to the addiction, the hunger, your chest suffering from all that clean fresh, untainted air that filled your lungs the whole night as you slept peacefully, all curled up in your my little pony sheets. Now it's the dawn of a new day and without thought, just impulse, you reach for your soft pack of Viceroys only to find that in your drunken stupor the previous night you forgot to buy a new pack and your out of luck, and Viceroys. What are you going to do? I guess the only answer is to throw on your daisy dukes and some half cabs and half step your way to the local bodega to re-up, but to no avail. Your broke, you spent all your cash at the karaoke bar getting sloshed while singing Nickelback songs and you haven't a nickel bag, let alone a nickel to your name. With options few and far between you stagger your half drunken, nicotine jonesing ass out the door of your pad and head down the stairs to the street where your options multiply. Looking around for the first sad soul you can bum a stoge from you see a bum you can steal a butt from, sleeping in the morning sun on a bench built of love and hope. You inch closer and closer, you can almost taste the tobacco, your lips tingling, throat kvetching, lungs constricting. You reach for the stoge dangling from the hobos lips and make a clean getaway. You did it, you won the game, you past the test, you pitted yourself against addiction and you won, you beat it, you prevailed. From the lips of a hobo you live again! Standing tall and triumphant you wipe the shmutz off the end of your freshly swiped cig and place it between your lips ready to taste the fruits of your labor! You gleefully reach into your pockets and finger around searching for fire but alas you have none to be found, you don't even have the keys to your humble abode. You sigh and rest your weary bones on the curb and soak up the fact that your back to square one. Addiction is a worthy adversary...

I mean, with the conversion being so good for the people in Europe I bet this guy with no legs makes more money in dollars than most people I know here in America per hour. He had a whole heap of euros in front of him and I kept thinking maybe I should just snag that money and run, he has no legs, it's not like he's gonna catch me!
